A long line of vehicles wound around the parking lot of Clinica Sierra Vista in southwest Bakersfield on Sunday, ahead of the October 31 holiday. Hundreds of residents attended a Trunk-or-Treat event that required no ticket or fee, allowing families to gather without the usual cost of a night out.

Grandmother Jamie Lujan cited the lack of expense as the primary reason her group participated. She explained that attending without a budget made the experience accessible for her entire family. "It's most definitely a help out when you get to bring the whole family and not worry about what the amount is or if we're going to be able to stay or if they're gonna want something that we can't get them," Lujan said.

Volunteers decorated their vehicle trunks with seasonal themes and filled them with candy for the crowd. Children and adults arrived in costumes, turning the parking area into a festive gathering space. The atmosphere remained informal as visitors moved from one decorated car to the next.

The event also served as an outreach opportunity for local agencies. Hannah Weightman, who represents the Community Action Partnership of Kern, decorated her trunk with a Hocus Pocus theme. She used the gathering to speak directly with residents about available aid. "I love being able to communicate with the community and show them that what services we have available because a lot of people they don't know what services are available to them," Weightman said.

Clinica Sierra Vista, which is celebrating its 55th anniversary, organized the afternoon event. CEO Dr. Olga Meave stated that the clinic chose to host the gathering to support families facing financial pressure. "I think you know the situation is not easy for anybody so when we have an opportunity to provide something free for the community. We take it," Meave said.
