A 36-year-old British woman died on Tuesday after a strong ocean current carried her away while she attempted to rescue her two sons near North Bimini. The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred during a family snorkeling trip in the Bahamas.
Police reported that the woman was in the water with her husband and their two sons near the southern point of North Bimini when the current took the boys. As she moved to reach them, the current also swept her away. Authorities confirmed that the two children were eventually pulled from the water and rescued.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10:00 am on Tuesday. They were told a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. When responding officers arrived, the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical treatment.
A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic despite resuscitation efforts. Police stated that the woman was initially pulled from the water and brought to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered. The force noted that foul play is not suspected at this stage.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case and is in contact with local authorities. A spokesperson said officials are providing support to the family.
North Bimini is part of a small island group located between Andros and Miami. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the United States mainland. The islands are also known for a shark research center and for once being home to author Ernest Hemingway.
The woman’s husband and two sons were present during the snorkeling activity. Police have not released further details regarding the medical conditions of the children or the husband since the incident.
