Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis is recovering in a local hospital following a medical emergency that occurred at the team facility on Wednesday. His father, T. Carlton Lewis, announced the news via social media, noting that Lewis was transported to care shortly after the episode.
The incident leaves the Buffaloes without a key offensive option for an undetermined period. The family has requested privacy while Lewis recovers, and the program has stated it has no further details to share regarding the specific nature of the emergency.
Head coach Deion Sanders had addressed the quarterback competition just one day before the incident. Speaking on Tuesday, Sanders indicated that Lewis could still earn the starting role back later this season. Sanders told reporters that he does not play games with young men and their careers, adding that he is forgiving and kind. He referenced punter Damon Greaves as an example of his treatment of players inside the locker room.
Lewis is in his second season with Colorado, having arrived as a four-star recruit in the 2025 signing class. Out of Carrollton High School in Georgia, he was ranked the No. 10 quarterback in the recruiting cycle by 247Sports. He won the starting job out of training camp this fall and played in the first four games of the season.
The offense shifted to Isaac Wilson as the starter for the last three games after struggling to find a rhythm. In the season opener against Georgia Tech, Lewis helped secure a road victory with a late touchdown pass to Charlie Williams. Since then, Wilson has started all three contests.
In his eight career appearances for the Buffaloes, Lewis has completed 59.8 percent of his passes. He has thrown for 1,322 yards with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. Colorado Athletics said it extends full support to Lewis and his family, stating his health remains the top priority.
