Former California Rep. Eric Swalwell faced a new phase of federal scrutiny on Tuesday morning when agents executed a search warrant at his Beverly Hills residence.
FBI spokesperson Lourdes Arocho confirmed the operation on North Roxbury Drive, noting that court documents remain sealed and no arrests were planned. This action marks the latest step in an inquiry into whether Swalwill violated federal civil rights laws while serving as a member of Congress.
The legal basis for the probe rests on a statute that criminalizes the willful deprivation of constitutional rights by officials acting under government authority. Prosecutors are examining allegations that Swalwell sexually assaulted a former staffer and acted inappropriately with other young women. Swalwell has denied any wrongdoing, yet the accusations forced him to resign from Congress and withdraw from the California gubernatorial race in April.
Agents had previously seized Swalwell's electronic devices, including a white iPhone and a MacBook Pro, during a search of his Washington home in August. Investigators also briefly held the former lawmaker at San Francisco International Airport during that period. Court records indicate the seizure of these devices was part of the effort to determine if his actions met the threshold for a federal crime.
Separate investigations are currently underway in New York and Los Angeles County. The federal probe follows a summer search of Swalwell's home based on a warrant tied to the same civil rights concerns. The case has prompted a wider reckoning on Capitol Hill regarding secrecy and sexual impropriety among lawmakers from both parties.
