Jordan has long projected an image of religious stability, yet a violent disruption of that norm occurred on Friday in the southern region. Gunmen struck a place of worship during a funeral service, resulting in a significant loss of life in an area known for its mixed population.
The attack took place in the village of Hammoud, located within Karak governorate, which sits roughly 110 miles south of the capital, Amman. Authorities confirmed that at least seven people were killed in the shooting. This incident is being described as a rare assault on Christians in a kingdom where the majority of the population is Sunni Muslim. The targeted site was the compound of a Greek Orthodox church.
According to the public security directorate, the assailants arrived in a vehicle and exited to open fire while a funeral procession was underway. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the media later that day, stating that 34 others were wounded in the incident. He attributed the violence to a group of extremists. A manhunt for the perpetrators is currently ongoing as security forces work to identify and capture those responsible.
Visual evidence aired by the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka provides a clear look at the chaos of the moment. The footage shows two gunmen dressed in casual clothing wielding pistols, while a third individual carries a long gun. They are seen firing from a street entrance before advancing toward the church. An eyewitness who spoke to the broadcaster described the attackers as firing without pause for approximately five minutes. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were inside or around the church at the time and noted that most of the victims were older adults, ranging in age from 50 to 70.
The political response to the tragedy has been swift and severe. King Abdullah II pledged the harshest retaliation against those responsible for the attack. In a statement on social media, the King emphasized that every Jordanian life is precious. He vowed to strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten the nation. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani confirmed that security forces are actively investigating the details of the assault.
The incident has also drawn attention from across the region. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who is the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the shooting as a heinous terrorist attack. A statement from the presidency noted that the violence reaffirms that terrorism has no religion or homeland. Aoun added that the aim of such acts is to strike at coexistence and spread strife among the people.
Karak governorate has a history of deadly violence, which adds a layer of complexity to the current situation. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in the area, including one at a Crusader castle that is popular with tourists. That incident resulted in ten deaths, seven of whom were officers, and left dozens wounded. Security forces eventually killed the attackers after a lengthy standoff. The current event marks another significant disruption to the security of this historically sensitive region.
