Portland residents will experience a sharp drop in temperatures before facing the wettest stretch of weather in months.

Current conditions show the metro area climbing through the upper 50s Fahrenheit, with highs expected to stay in that range for Tuesday. Overnight clouds will clear, allowing temperatures to fall rapidly. Forecasters predict lows will reach the mid to upper 30s in outlying areas by Wednesday morning, accompanied by patchy fog.

Dry conditions will persist until a front arrives Wednesday afternoon. This system will introduce showers and mark the beginning of a more active weather pattern as the jet stream moves closer to the coast. Dry or mainly dry days are projected for Thursday, Saturday, and Monday. Saturday's high temperature depends on cloud cover, with predictions ranging from the 50s to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rainfall through Sunday is expected to be light, totaling approximately half an inch. A much wetter southwest flow will settle in after the weekend. Models indicate a large low pressure system will sit just offshore, sending waves of heavier rain and stronger winds into the region next week.

The shift to wetter conditions follows a period of cloudier than expected skies this week. The approaching system signals a change in the regional jet stream, bringing sustained moisture to the Pacific Northwest.
