Apple’s first foldable smartphone is now in customers' hands, but it arrives with a list of add-ons required for full use.

The iPhone Duo introduces Apple Pencil support to the iPhone lineup for the first time. Users can write notes and sketch on both the outer and inner displays. Apple states the design mimics the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. The feature arrives in the iOS 27.2 update next week. Only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible. It is currently priced at $69, a drop from its standard $79 cost.

Fast charging requires specific hardware to reach maximum speeds. The phone reaches 50 percent charge in about 20 minutes. This speed depends on using a suitable power adapter. The box includes a USB-C cable but no charger. Many owners likely have a 20W adapter at home. Tech site 9to5Mac suggests the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, now $34 after a discount from $39. Anker offers a 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable for $29.

Drivers and home users face additional costs for optimal integration. The ESR MagSafe Car Mount clips to an air vent and holds the phone magnetically. It costs $19, down from $29. The larger display allows CarPlay to show maps on the car's screen while the phone displays step-by-step directions in Apple Maps. For home security, the Duo upgrades StandBy mode. When standing upright, the phone can display Home Camera and Home Modular views without charging. 9to5Mac recommends the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 or a eufy 4K camera at $69 for HomeKit compatibility.

Case options range from third-party brands to Apple's own products. The SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case includes a built-in stand and screen protector for $29. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro offers a clear MagSafe-compatible design for $39. Apple sells the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at $129 and the iPhone Duo Case at $79. A bonus recommendation is the AirPods Pro 3, currently on sale at Amazon for $199, down from $249.

These accessories add up quickly for early adopters. The stylus alone costs $69. Adding a new charger and a case pushes the total spend higher. The site noted that the AirPods Pro 3 are not specific to the Duo but are a current deal. The launch marks a new standard for input and charging requirements on foldable devices.
