The Duchess of Sussex issued a formal response this week to address new claims regarding her father, Thomas Markle Sr. She described herself as deeply distressed by reports that he possessed images linked to child sexual abuse. This statement follows a news report in The Sun, which detailed accounts from her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr. The brother alleged that he discovered a large collection of such images at the couple's former residence in the Philippines.
Markle Sr has pushed back against the narrative, calling the accusations sick lies in an interview with the Daily Mail. Meanwhile, Meghan’s spokesperson confirmed that the Metropolitan Police had informed her of these disturbing allegations back in 2018. The duchess explained that a letter sent to the Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection unit, or Rasp, was eventually shared with her. She noted that she was told the claims were under active investigation at the time.
According to Meghan, her distance from her father and her choice to limit his contact with their children were driven by a single goal: protecting them. She expressed trust that authorities were handling the matter with similar care for other families. Her statement expressed hope that justice would be fully served and that the safety of children would remain the central focus of the case.
Insiders explained why Meghan did not speak out publicly in 2018. They noted that doing so could have jeopardized any potential future investigation. Additionally, public comments might have opened the door to legal action against her. It is understood that the Rasp unit passed her the letter shortly after her wedding to Prince Harry. The Metropolitan Police has not previously investigated Markle Sr, nor is it currently doing so. However, the force is conducting internal inquiries to determine if Rasp officers were indeed involved in passing the letter along.
The Sun reported that Markle Jr, now 60, told detectives in the Philippines that he found hundreds, if not thousands, of images on computers and mobile phones. These devices were reportedly stored in four large boxes at the home in Cebu. Markle Sr lived in that location until he returned to the United States in May following a stroke. The brother also contacted the FBI, which stated it would support Philippine authorities and investigate any related federal violations of US law.
Philippine officials have confirmed that the matter is actively under investigation. Nicholas Ty, an undersecretary at the justice department, told the BBC that a local taskforce handling human trafficking and child sexual exploitation is leading the effort. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla added that national police have secured Markle Sr's computer for a comprehensive digital forensic examination. He expects the forensic results to be ready within one week.
Markle Sr, who is currently at a rehabilitation center in Florida, reacted to the news with shock and hurt. He is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after his left leg was amputated due to a blood clot. He told the Daily Mail that he could never do what he is being accused of. He clarified that the computers in question had not been in his possession since he left Rosarito, Mexico, in January 2025. He moved to the Philippines with his son to start fresh.
The family remains divided over the details of the claim. Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Markle, defended their father and accused Markle Jr of making up lies for financial gain. She noted that the allegations surfaced days after their father cut off his funds. Samantha also highlighted that the computers were out of the father's possession for two years, suggesting there was ample room for tampering. Markle Sr has been estranged from his daughter since he missed her wedding on health grounds. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, who is seven, and Princess Lilibet, who is five.
The next steps in this unfolding story will likely center on the digital forensic analysis in the Philippines. As the family members continue to share their perspectives, the public is left waiting for the technical results that may confirm or refute the existence of the alleged images. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that the children involved are kept safe and that the legal processes are handled with the necessary discretion.
