Kylian Mbappe has entered the Ballon d'Or voting with the all-time record for World Cup goals, a statistic he believes compensates for a season in which he failed to win a single major trophy. The award will be presented at a ceremony in London on Monday. The prize carries no cash value, but it elevates a player's market status and standing in the sport.

Mbappe's strongest evidence comes from the 2026 World Cup in North America, where he scored 22 goals in 22 matches. That total places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who holds the second-most goals with 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe also won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. "Being the all-time top scorer in World Cup history, overtaking all the great legends in the history of the sport in the most important tournament there is, is something that really stands out," he said in a recent interview. When asked who he voted for, he replied, "Myself."

His club performance provided additional support for his candidacy. The former PSG forward finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and led the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals. "I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it," Mbappe said. Despite these individual numbers, Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. France placed fourth at the World Cup, falling to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.

Rivals have stronger trophy counts for the 2025-26 period. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the league title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies, including the Bundesliga championship. Mbappe's manager, Jose Mourinho, supports the forward's bid, noting, "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team."

The historical context poses a challenge for Mbappe. In the past ten years, every Ballon d'Or winner lifted at least one major trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG secure a Champions League title, while Rodri won the previous year's award after claiming Euro 2024 and the Premier League title. The last player to win the award without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. He finished that season as Real Madrid's league runner-up and with Portugal in the World Cup playoffs, yet he still outvoted his peers to end Lionel Messi's four-year winning streak.

Mbappe maintains that individual brilliance is the defining factor for the award. "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player," he told RFI radio. The 2026-27 season begins soon, but the voters will base their decision on the final months of the 2025-26 campaign and the summer tournament. Mbappe has now received nine nominations and placed third in 2023.
