Kylian Mbappe scored twice on Sunday night to lead Real Madrid past Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou. The French forward reached 100 goals for his club with the brace, which also lifted his season total to 14. The result snapped Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in La Liga and gave Real Madrid the lead in the all-time head-to-head record.

Real Madrid became the first team to defeat Barcelona in the league this season. The win halted a run that, had it continued, would have broken the club's 1968-69 record for the best start in Spanish top flight history. It was also Hansi Flick's second consecutive loss, following a recent defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The victory shifted the all-time Clasico record to 107 wins for Real Madrid and 106 for Barcelona. This marks the second time in eight meetings that Real Madrid has beaten their rivals this season. The result comes just over a quarter of the way through the campaign, with Real Madrid currently sitting third in the standings.

Mbappe's milestone arrived one day before the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid from PSG in 2024 and has since become the second-best scorer in La Liga. Last season, he finished as the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League, while also winning the World Cup Golden Boot and becoming the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup.

Real Madrid have won five of their last six matches, including three in the league and two in the Champions League. This recent stability contrasts with last month, when they lost to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid. They now sit three points behind Barcelona, with Atletico Madrid in second place on 25 points, while Real Madrid have 24.

Jose Mourinho, who returned to the club after two trophyless seasons, said the team is playing to win the championship rather than just the match. "If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," he said. "They're playing to win the championship."

Mourinho celebrated the win with a knee slide, a move that has become his signature. He had not won a league title since leading Chelsea in the 2014-15 season, but his previous stint at Real Madrid produced three trophies, including a record-breaking La Liga title. The 63-year-old manager now has a result to build upon as the season progresses.
