Adam Schwegman was booked into Topeka County jail on Saturday, November 1, facing 16 charges that include aggravated battery and rape. The charges stem from a sequence of violent acts on Wednesday, October 28, that left three people stabbed and two homes broken into.
Police records show the incident began along S.W. Fillmore Street, where Schwegman stabbed two victims. His booking documents also list an allegation of rape at that same address. He then moved further up the road and entered two houses. Four children were inside one of the residences, including an infant who was four months old. Officials confirmed the children were not injured during the break-ins.
The violence continued on a nearby street, where a third victim was stabbed. The final known victim was a 70-year-old woman who was attacked at Ward Meade Park. Schwegman fled the park and was spotted by Ron Hubbard, who was standing with a friend nearby.
Hubbard described seeing a stranger acting suspiciously up the street. He and his friend approached Schwegman because another man had previously seen him at the park. Hubbard said he stepped in to stop the suspect from moving further. He threw his leg out to trip Schwegman, causing the suspect to fall into the grass. The knife Schwegman was carrying also fell into the grass.
Hubbard kicked the weapon onto the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman. The suspect eventually escaped their hold, but Topeka police officers caught him shortly after. Hubbard said he acted based on a scenario he had seen on television involving a delivery person stopping a car thief.
Schwegman appeared in court on Thursday, October 29, for his first hearing. A judge set a total bond of $3 million. The suspect has been held in custody since his booking.
The 16 charges filed by Topeka police include multiple counts of aggravated battery. The rape charge is linked to the initial incident on S.W. Fillmore Street. The case involves a total of 17 victims across the series of events.
