A weapon discharged while holstered, striking film director Michael Mann in the leg at a Los Angeles shooting range on Saturday afternoon. His representative confirmed on Sunday that Mann, 83, suffered a superficial injury and was treated before being released from the hospital.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at Range LA. Police and paramedics responded to the scene, and Mann was transported by ambulance. A person familiar with the circumstances described the wound as minor and subcutaneous. Mann was engaged in target practice at the sanctioned facility when the accidental discharge happened.

Mann is a veteran of the firearm sport, having practiced target shooting for decades. The director is well known for his precise depiction of gun violence in cinema. His 1995 crime thriller Heat features an extended shootout in downtown Los Angeles between armed robbers and police. That sequence remains one of the most studied examples of realistic gunplay in film history.

The filmmaker is currently developing a sequel to Heat. Production for that project is expected to begin in early 2027. Mann’s career spans five decades, including the 1981 heist film Thief and the 1999 thriller The Insider, which received seven Academy Award nominations. He also served as executive producer for the 1980s television series Miami Vice before directing its 2006 film adaptation.

His other notable credits include The Last of the Mohicans in 1992, Ali in 2001, and the 2023 biographical drama Ferrari. The director’s recent work has continued to focus on historical figures and intense action sequences. The injury is expected to have a limited impact on his upcoming production schedule.
