College football has reached its most crowded point of the season. The upcoming slate includes the highest number of top 25 matchups for a single Saturday in history. This density has shifted attention from the AP poll to the College Football Playoff selection committee. Teams are now fighting for seven at large spots in the 12 team bracket. Automatic bids are reserved for the top four conference champions and the highest ranked Group of Six team.
In the Big Ten, No. 19 Iowa travels to Northwestern as a slight underdog. Analysts Brad Crawford and Chris Hummer both pick the Hawkeyes. They point to Iowa's superior play along the lines of scrimmage as the deciding factor. The prediction is a low scoring affair where Iowa edges out the Wildcats.
The Big 12 offers a clash between No. 9 BYU and No. 3 Utah. Both teams feature strong run games and offensive lines. However, the analysts view Utah as more explosive. They expect the Utes to generate chunk plays and force turnovers to pull away late. This win would continue Utah's pursuit of a perfect season.
In the SEC, No. 7 Texas faces No. 18 Missouri. The Longhorns are dealing with injury concerns in the secondary. Despite that, they are expected to control the lines of scrimmage and exploit Missouri's passing defense. Elsewhere in the conference, No. 5 Alabama visits No. 14 LSU. This is a critical contest where the loser may be eliminated from playoff contention. LSU is favored to win based on their defensive front and Alabama's struggles in pass protection.
No. 12 Ohio State hosts No. 23 Oregon. Both teams are missing their starting quarterbacks. Ohio State is a heavy favorite to bounce back from a recent loss. The Buckeyes are projected to secure a comfortable victory to maintain their conference standing. Meanwhile, No. 6 Kentucky visits No. 13 Tennessee. The Vols need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kentucky can afford a loss and still secure a first round home game.
No. 8 UCLA travels to Minnesota, where the Gophers are favored to cover the spread. Both teams boast top 35 defenses. The analysts predict a defensive battle, but UCLA is expected to win the game outright due to offensive consistency. No. 2 Georgia travels to No. 10 Ole Miss. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss poses a threat, but Georgia is favored to win by controlling the lines of scrimmage.
The weekend's marquee game features No. 1 Miami visiting No. 11 Notre Dame. The Hurricanes are the only unbeaten team in the Power Four. The Fighting Irish seek their first ranked win of the season. Analysts are divided on the outcome. Some favor Miami's elite run defense, while others point to Notre Dame's home advantage. The contest is expected to be tight and could determine the number one seed in the College Football Playoff.
