The Serbian Student List has entered negotiations to form a new government following a decisive electoral victory on Sunday. This result ends the 14 year tenure of President Aleksandar Vucic and his party, a feat that traditional opposition groups had failed to achieve for over a decade. The movement, which operated without a single named leader, secured the mandate after a two year campaign that began with the death of 16 people in a train canopy collapse at a renovated station in 2024.

The students maintained political independence throughout the struggle, refusing alignment with domestic parties or the four major geopolitical powers: Russia, China, the European Union, and the United States. Instead of joining existing structures, they established their own alternative political scene. Across the country, they blockaded universities and filled public squares with peaceful protests and vigils. At the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad, the largest university department with more than 16,000 enrolled students, the occupied campus functioned as a self sustaining hub. Student guards controlled entrances, and on site kitchens and medical stations operated by student nurses provided daily support.

The movement introduced direct democratic practices to select its candidates. Decisions were made collectively through assemblies and local committees rather than by party leadership. Candidates were chosen after public interviews where groups of up to 300 students questioned each nominee. The final list ensured equal gender distribution and representation from various university regions. Established politicians were excluded from the candidate pool, a decision that rejected the leadership based politics common in Europe.

The new government faces immediate economic and diplomatic challenges. The Student List electoral programme explicitly condemns the genocide in Gaza. Under the previous administration, Serbian arms exports to Israel increased from $3.3 million in 2023 to $126 million in 2025. In September, Vucic opened a factory for the production of Israeli drones. Fulfilling the campaign promise would require halting these exports, a move that could disrupt Serbia's security cooperation and foreign investment relationships.

External actors have already intervened in the political transition. US based conservative influencers framed support for Vucic during the final days of the campaign as a defense of Serbian Christian identity against Islamization. The Conservative Political Action Conference is scheduled to open a Serbian chapter in November, with Vucic expected to play a central role. The Student List must now navigate these geopolitical tensions while implementing its platform.

The movement's success has drawn attention to similar student protests in Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain. Those movements have largely been ignored by international media until the Serbian results were confirmed. The Serbian experiment demonstrates that a leaderless, decentralized political structure can sustain long term pressure and translate civic anger into electoral power. The next phase of the government formation process will test the durability of this new political model.
