The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will operate a sobriety checkpoint in Mission Viejo on Friday, October 30.
Deputies will station themselves at an undisclosed site from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. to screen motorists for signs of impairment. The department selects locations based on collision data and the frequency of prior DUI arrests in the area.
Officers will test drivers for alcohol and drug influence while verifying that they hold valid licenses. The Sheriff’s Department emphasizes that impairment can stem from sources other than beer or wine. Prescription medications with warnings about operating machinery can affect a driver’s ability to control a vehicle. Marijuana may also cause impairment, particularly when mixed with alcohol or other substances.
The department advises residents to arrange alternative transportation before drinking. Options include a designated sober driver, a ride-share service, a taxi, or public transit. Drivers who spot a visibly impaired motorist should take the keys if they have the driver’s consent and help arrange a safe ride home. Observers can also report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911. Hosts of parties are encouraged to provide nonalcoholic beverages and monitor how guests plan to leave.
A DUI conviction carries substantial financial penalties. The department states that drivers charged with driving under the influence can expect costs to reach $13,500 or more. This estimate covers fines, mandatory fees, education classes, and license suspension fees. Possible jail time is an additional consequence of the arrest.
Funding for the checkpoint comes from a grant by the California Office of Traffic Safety, which receives support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
