Ten specific dishes represent the peak of Southern California dining for the month of October 2026. Reporters for the San Bernardino Sun identified these meals from restaurants across Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties. The selection includes new menu debuts, limited-time favorites, and final offerings from closing establishments. Each item was chosen for its flavor, presentation, or cultural significance to the local food scene.
The list spans a wide range of price points and culinary styles. A $72 breakfast at a Costa Mesa jewelry store features scrambled eggs topped with Ossetra caviar. At the other end of the spectrum, a San Clemente restaurant offers meatballs described as a simple combination of meat, tomato sauce, and cheese. The dishes reflect a shift toward seasonal ingredients and creative fusion concepts in the region.
Blue Box Café by Daniel Boulud at Tiffany & Co. in Costa Mesa offers a tiered-plate breakfast for $72. The menu includes omelets and caviar served in eggshells. The dish pairs softly scrambled egg with Ossetra caviar. The presentation uses the brown eggshell as a serving vessel. The meal is designed to turn breakfast into a special occasion for diners.
Sampa in the Los Angeles Arts District is closing its doors at the end of the year. The restaurant serves creative Filipino fusion cuisine. During October, which is Filipino American History Month, reporters ordered several elevated dishes. These included kare-kare tamales made with braised oxtail and kampachi kilawin. The kilawin is a ceviche flavored with coconut, calamansi, and ponzu. The meal also featured crab fat fried rice and crispy duck pancit.
Girl & the Goat in the Arts District continues to serve grilled corn that has become a signature item. The cobs are coated in a spiced coconut caramel sauce. The dish also includes cotija cheese and tajin. The restaurant is located in the Arts District and serves roasted carrots with harissa dill and tzatziki. The corn dish remains on the menu despite being a seasonal favorite.
Sonder in Santa Ana, owned by siblings Lamson and Diane Nguyen, serves an outside skirt steak dish. The sliced beef rests over coconut-creamed collard greens. The plate is finished with a Sichuan vinegar sauce. The restaurant uses found objects for its dishware and decor. The dining room is described as striking yet chill, offering a unique atmosphere in Orange County.
Mercado González held its grand opening in La Habra on October 21. The event marked the debut of the company's second Mercado concept. Guests and politicians took a ceremonial first bite of concha, a Mexican sweet bread. The market's panaderia bakes pan dulce daily. The concha features a distinctive shell-patterned, crackly sugar top. The market also serves tacos, ceviche, and chicharrones.
Gwen in Hollywood, named for Iron Chef Curtis Stone's grandmother, offers a 16-ounce grass-fed ribeye. The steak is cooked over an open wood fire and served with duck fat potatoes and broccolini. The restaurant also serves a duck speck appetizer paired with honeydew melon. The dining room features dim lighting and high ceilings, creating an old Hollywood atmosphere. The restaurant holds a Michelin star.
Other notable dishes include a gluten-free mushroom lovers pizza at Pizza Boy in Glendale. The restaurant offers nine types of gluten-free crusts, including broccoli and beet. A separate oven is used exclusively for gluten-free pizzas. Iroha Sushi of Tokyo in Studio City serves a crispy sushi rice cake cut into triangles. The dish is available to-go with the fish and rice kept separate. Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood offers butternut squash tortellini in a brown butter sage sauce. The dish is served as a shared appetizer.
