The Alaska Senate seat held by a Republican has shifted its influence in the state's top executive race. Sen. Lisa Murkowski endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins on Tuesday, a move that separates her from President Donald Trump.

Murkowski made the announcement in an interview with KTUU. She described Kreiss-Tomkins as a common-sense guy who has a known ability to be working together. The endorsement also covers his running mate, nonpartisan candidate Zac Johnson.

The decision creates a clear split in the Republican establishment. President Trump has officially backed Republican Bernadette Wilson. The race features multiple Republican candidates and will be decided using ranked-choice voting.

In a campaign press release, Murkowski argued that partisan divisions should not hamper the state's future. She emphasized the need for listening to different perspectives. Her stated priorities include a fiscal future conversation, energy costs, and economic growth.

Kreiss-Tomkins said he was honored by the support. He pledged to work with the congressional delegation and industry groups. He stated that that work requires cooperation, not political conflict.
