The Edmonton Oilers defeated the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, securing their 11th win in 15 games this season. Matt Tomkins, the team's goaltender for the night, took home the first star award after stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced. It was his first start since April 17, 2024, and only his seventh in the National Hockey League.

Tomkins, 32, is from Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton. He made his NHL debut in 2023 after turning 29. Before joining the top league, he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Indy Fuel, the Rockford IceHogs, Frolunda, and Farjestads BK. He also served as Canada's starter at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing after the NHL withdrew from the tournament at the last minute.

The opportunity to start against the Rangers arose due to injuries to Oilers goalies Devon Levi and Frederik Andersen. Additionally, the team scheduled games on consecutive days this weekend, creating a need for a third goalie. Tomkins had spent the last 928 days playing in the American Hockey League for the Syracuse Crunch and the Bakersfield Condors.

Captain Connor McDavid praised his teammate's performance. McDavid said Tomkins was awesome and gave the team a chance to win. He described the goaltender as solid, noting that Tomkins made the necessary saves. McDavid also expressed joy for Tomkins, acknowledging the hard work the goalie put in during the summer in Edmonton.

Tomkins admitted there was some doubt regarding his return to the league. He noted that while his ability was not in question, the opportunity was uncertain. He pointed out that there are only 64 jobs available at any given time, with many capable goalies competing for them daily. He had not been certain he would get another chance, let alone one with his hometown team.

The performance capped a long career that included various stops in junior hockey, college, and minor professional leagues. Tomkins described his journey as tough but enjoyable. He stated that he loves to play and has enjoyed every step of his career, which has taken him around the world. He emphasized the fun of playing in a special building after growing up as an Oilers fan.

Tomkins said he was excited to get the start after a couple of years away from the league. He focused on enjoying the day and taking it all in while helping the team win. With Tristan Jarry returning from back-to-back shutouts and Levi and Andersen working toward full availability, this may be Tomkins' only chance in his current call-up. He took full advantage of the spotlight during the game.
