U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized on Saturday after experiencing a stroke. Murphy began feeling numbness in one arm while watching his son play hockey. His chief of staff confirmed the diagnosis in a written statement.

The senator was first taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a cerebrovascular accident. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for more detailed monitoring. Medical staff reported that Murphy is conscious, alert, and responding well to his current treatment plan.

The incident occurred just days before a scheduled election day. Murphy has represented Connecticut in the U.S. Senate since 2013. State leaders quickly issued remarks regarding his condition and the upcoming vote.

Gov. Ned Lamont stated that he had spent time with Murphy two days prior to the event. Lamont described Murphy as a strong defender of democracy and a close personal friend. The governor noted that he and his wife, Annie, are praying for the senator and his family. Lamont expressed confidence that Murphy would return to campaigning across the state soon.

Vice Gov. Susan Bysiewicz added that she had been with Murphy on Friday night. She recalled him enthusiastically encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming elections. Bysiewicz expressed relief at hearing that he is in good spirits and hoped for continued collaboration for the benefit of Connecticut residents.

Sen. Ryan Fazio also sent a message of support. Fazio said he is keeping Murphy and his family in his prayers during this difficult time. He wished the senator a complete and speedy recovery.

The chief of staff’s statement included a direct quote from the medical team. The doctors are described as optimistic regarding Murphy’s progress. The office expressed confidence that the senator will achieve a full recovery.
