Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is in the hospital after suffering a stroke, his office announced on Sunday. The 53-year-old lawmaker is currently at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where medical staff are monitoring his condition.

Allison Herwitt, Murphy's chief of staff, said the senator began feeling numbness in his arm while watching his son play hockey the day before. Staff took him to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Doctors there confirmed a stroke. Murphy was moved to Johns Hopkins for continued care. Herwitt said he is responding well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Murphy has been an active voice in the Democratic Party during this midterm cycle. He served as a campaign surrogate for several candidates. He also positioned himself as a foreign policy leader and a strong critic of the executive branch. Just before this health event, he returned from a tour of the Middle East. He warned that President Trump would increase military action against Iran after the midterm elections.

The senator is one of several members of Congress who faced health challenges this year. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spent months in the hospital and in rehabilitation earlier in the year. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., was absent from the Capitol for a long period while receiving treatment for depression. In 2022, three prominent Democrats also suffered strokes: Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and former Senate candidate John Fetterman.
