DeepSeek has secured approximately $15 billion in new funding, a move that lands just two days after the United States ordered federal civilian agencies to remove the company’s artificial intelligence technology from their networks. The Chinese AI lab, based in Hangzhou, reportedly closed one of the largest funding rounds in its history, valued at roughly 100 billion yuan, despite the immediate regulatory friction from its largest market. According to Bloomberg, the fresh capital will fuel the company’s continued expansion and infrastructure development.

The timing of the investment is particularly notable given the recent security concerns raised by U.S. officials. The American government mandated the removal of DeepSeek’s tools from federal systems, citing potential risks associated with the technology. However, the influx of billions of dollars suggests that confidence in the startup remains high among major financial backers. The company is now positioned to accelerate its global footprint while navigating the complex landscape of international tech policy.

Reports indicate that the investor pool for this round includes several heavyweight Chinese entities. CATL, a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, is among the potential backers. Tencent, the technology giant known for developing WeChat, is also reportedly involved in the financing. These strategic partnerships signal a strong domestic support structure for DeepSeek as it scales its operations. The involvement of such major players underscores the importance of the AI sector to China’s broader economic and technological ambitions.

This latest capital injection follows a series of significant financial milestones for the startup. In June of this year, DeepSeek raised more than $7 billion at a valuation of $50 billion. Just one month later, in July, the company was reportedly seeking an additional $1.5 billion at a valuation near $71 billion. These consecutive rounds highlight the rapid growth and high expectations surrounding the firm. The company has also been linked to plans for a potential initial public offering in China as early as next year, which would mark a major exit event for its early investors.

With the new funds, DeepSeek is ramping up spending on AI infrastructure and the development of open models. The strategy targets both domestic and international markets, aiming to maintain its competitive edge even while facing restrictions in the United States. This aggressive expansion is likely to intensify competition among domestic rivals, forcing other Chinese AI companies to match DeepSeek’s pace of innovation and deployment. The startup is positioning itself as a primary challenger to established global players in the sector.

The DeepSeek raise is part of a broader trend of massive investments in AI companies worldwide. Investors are pouring billions into firms across China to keep pace in the global AI race. Moonshot AI, the developer of the Kimi model, secured $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation in May. Earlier this month, Manus AI raised over $500 million. Additionally, Zhipu AI and MiniMax, both of which listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange in January, currently hold market capitalizations of roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively. These figures illustrate the scale of capital flowing into the region’s tech ecosystem.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, a former co-founder of the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer. High-Flyer provided the initial financial backing that helped launch the startup. The company gained global attention in early 2025 when it released its free-to-use, open-weight reasoning model. This release challenged the dominance of major U.S. AI companies and established DeepSeek as a significant player in the field. According to corporate ownership data analyzed by WireScreen, Liang retains an estimated 81.6% stake in the company’s Chinese operating entity following its previous funding round. DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new funding.

The company’s ability to raise such a large sum in such a short period demonstrates its resilience and the strength of its backing. As it continues to invest in infrastructure and open models, DeepSeek is set to play a central role in the evolving dynamics of the global AI market. The interplay between its domestic support and international scrutiny will likely define its next phase of growth. For now, the focus remains on deploying the new capital to expand its technological capabilities and market reach.
