Oregon Democrats are on pace to win 40 of the 60 seats in the state House, a number that would stand as the party's highest total since 1974. Current projections show Democratic candidates leading in 39 races as of Tuesday night. This result would expand the party's current majority of 37 seats by three additional positions.

The projection relies on leads holding in several closely watched contests. In the 21st House District in Salem, occupational safety professional Michael Welsh held a 10 point lead over Republican Rep. Kevin Mannix. Mannix has served in the state Legislature for more than a decade. A win for Welsh would shift a long held Republican seat to a progressive Democrat.

In the 52nd House District in the Columbia River Gorge, Democrat Hank Sanders led Republican Scott Hege by roughly 10 points. Sanders, a 25 year old former journalist and legislative aide, challenged Hege, a 16 year county commissioner and former executive director of the Port of The Dalles. The race is considered one of the most expensive and competitive in the midterms.

Democrats also maintained or gained ground in districts that Republicans targeted for flips. In Springfield, Democrat Kori Rodley is on track to defeat Republican Adam Wilson for the 7th House District. Wilson is a wealth adviser. The seat is being vacated by 14 year Democratic Rep. John Lively, who chose not to run for reelection.

In Clackamas County, Democrat Michael Sugar held a substantial lead in the 40th House District. Sugar is a West Linn High School teacher challenging Republican Adam Baker, a police officer. Baker lost narrowly to Democratic Rep. Annessa Hartman in 2022. Hartman, a Gladstone resident, did not seek reelection.

On the North Coast, incumbent Rep. Cyrus Javadi led Republican Max Sherman in the 32nd House District. Javadi, a two term Republican who switched parties last year, cited a shift in the values of the Republican Party as a reason for his change. Sherman is a retired high school teacher who taught agricultural sciences in Tillamook and Canby.

In Woodburn, incumbent Rep. Lesly Muñoz led Republican Noemi Legaspi by about 10 points in the 22nd House District. Muñoz has served one two year term. Legaspi is a mental health counselor and former Woodburn School Board member. Both candidates are Latinas and campaigned in a district with the state's highest Hispanic population, where nearly 48 percent of residents identify as Hispanic.

In the state Senate, Democrats are positioned to increase their majority to a 19 to 11 split. This expansion would allow them to retain the three fifths supermajority required to pass new taxes or increase existing ones without Republican support. They would still lack the two thirds majority needed to maintain a quorum and pass bills if Republicans walk out of session.

The projected gains align with a nationwide shift among voters dissatisfied with President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Voters in Salem, Springfield, Clackamas County, and the North Coast played a decisive role in the final composition of the chamber.
