President Donald Trump labeled the mid-term elections held Tuesday as the most important in the nation's history during a final address at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The President stated that the Democratic Party nominated the most radical and dangerous candidates in American history. He specifically accused the opposition of fielding yihadists and members of the Muslim Brotherhood, a description he applied to Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Michigan. If El-Sayed wins the race, he would become the first Muslim senator in the country's history.
Trump closed a 25-day campaign tour with the speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. During the address, he detailed renovation projects in the capital and the White House. The President had previously visited several states, including Texas, Iowa, and Kansas, which polling data suggests are leaning toward Democratic candidates.
Decision Desk HQ modeling indicates a strong likelihood of a Democratic victory in the House of Representatives. The model assigns an 84% probability to the Democrats taking control of the chamber. This figure represents a five-point increase from the estimate published one week prior. For the Senate, where 35 seats are up for election, the same data source calculates a 65% chance of a Democratic majority. That probability has risen by eight percentage points over the last seven days.
The Tuesday vote determines the composition of the 435-member House of Representatives and the 35 open Senate seats. Voters in more than 30 states also select their governors. Additional local offices are decided in the same election. The results will determine which party holds the majority in Congress for the remainder of the current term.
Trump described the opposition's candidates as dangerous and radical throughout his campaign. He repeated the characterization of Muslim Brotherhood members during his final speech. El-Sayed is the primary target of that specific accusation. The President's comments set the stage for a contest where the Republican majority in Congress faces a strong challenge from the opposition party.
