Flood Rescue: 29 Pets Arrive in Phoenix
The Arizona Humane Society is discounting adoptions to clear space for animals evacuated from the White Mountains.

Adopters in the Phoenix Valley can now save 50% on adoption fees for every animal currently in the care of the Arizona Humane Society. This temporary discount, running from Friday through Sunday, is designed to free up kennel space for 29 dogs and cats that arrived in Phoenix on Wednesday. These animals were transported from the Humane Society of the White Mountains in Lakeside, which is currently managing repairs after sustaining heavy damage from last week's flooding.
The relocation required a dedicated effort by the state's largest rescue. On Wednesday, the organization dispatched 10 workers to the eastern Arizona facility to safely remove the animals. The team drove the 29 pets down to the Rob & Melani Walton Papago Park Campus in Phoenix. The move allows the White Mountains shelter to concentrate its limited staff on structural recovery while the rescued animals wait for their permanent homes.
To help the public identify the newly arrived animals, the organization has applied a specific 'White Mountain Flood Rescue' logo to their profile pictures. Potential adopters can review the available dogs and cats on the organization's website at azhumane.org/adopt. The Phoenix shelter currently houses more than 300 pets, making the discount a practical tool to manage the increased population.
Dr. Steven Hansen, President and CEO of the Arizona Humane Society, explained the operational reasoning behind the transfer. "When our friends in the White Mountains needed help, our team answered the call," Hansen said. "By welcoming these pets, we’re giving their shelter the opportunity to focus on recovery while giving these animals a chance to find loving homes." Hansen emphasized that the organization is inviting the local community to participate in this immediate lifesaving effort.
The 50% fee reduction applies to all adoptable pets at the Phoenix location for the weekend, not just the 29 rescued animals. This strategy aims to accelerate the turnover rate in the kennels. The White Mountains shelter will continue its recovery process in Lakeside, while the Phoenix campus manages the new intake. The discount period ends on Sunday, after which standard adoption fees will resume for all animals in the system.
