Major League Baseball owners and the players union have until December 1 to sign a new collective bargaining agreement or face a work stoppage.

The current contract expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on that date, ending a cycle that began with the March 10, 2022, signing after a 99-day stoppage.

The central point of contention is the implementation of a salary cap.

Team owners argue that a cap would improve competitive balance by narrowing the financial gap between franchises.

In 2026, the New York Mets paid over $346 million, while the Cleveland Guardians spent less than $75 million, according to Spotrac.

Commissioner Rob Manfred stated in July that fans need a realistic belief that their teams can win, citing the need to address core concerns about parity.

The players association disputes that spending guarantees success, pointing to the 2026 postseason results.

The Milwaukee Brewers, ranked 19th in the regular season, swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS and defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series.

Bruce Meyer, acting executive director of the MLBPA, told NBC News that the Brewers' victory showed the salary cap justification held no water.

Meyer added that owners want the cap to boost profits and franchise values rather than to fix competitiveness.

Negotiations also cover local revenue sharing and the length of the regular season.

MLB proposed reducing the schedule from 162 games to 154 games starting in 2029, which would introduce a weekly off day for player health reasons, according to spokesman Glen Caplin in a statement ahead of the World Series discussions on the schedule proposal. He noted this change would also create a new national broadcast window and allow higher seeds to choose playoff opponents starting in 2027. The union must agree to these changes, along with updates to the drug-testing program and the use of microphones on players during games. If the two sides fail to reach a deal by December 1, players will be barred from team facilities and unpaid, and teams will be unable to sign players or execute trades. A lockout could cancel games if it persists into spring, with the league's national broadcast contracts potentially extending to 2029 if more than 60 games are cut from the 2027 schedule. The last MLB lockout ended on March 10, 2022, allowing the league to salvage a full 162-game season after delaying the start to April 7.
