OpenAI Eyes Record Private Funding

The AI leader is reportedly negotiating a massive new round that could push its value past the one-trillion-dollar mark before it goes public.

The race to define the next era of artificial intelligence is entering a new financial phase. Reports emerging this week indicate that OpenAI is finalizing a substantial private funding round, a move that appears to shift its strategy away from an immediate public debut.

According to sources speaking to CNBC, the company is in the process of raising up to $30 billion. This new capital injection would value the organization at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. The round is being led by the investment firm Coatue, alongside a group of investors based in the United Arab Emirates. While terms are still under negotiation and subject to change, these figures represent a significant leap forward for the ChatGPT developer.

This development follows a similar report from Bloomberg published one month ago, which suggested OpenAI was targeting a $30 billion raise at a slightly higher $1.4 trillion valuation. The current reports suggest that the UAE investment component might be tied to a separate agreement. Specifically, the funding could be coupled with a deal to secure additional computing capacity from the region, a critical resource for training and running large-scale AI models. OpenAI has declined to comment on the specific details of the negotiations.

If this round closes at the reported valuation, OpenAI would break the record for the most valuable private company in history. Achieving a valuation above one trillion dollars would not only set a new benchmark for the tech industry but would also raise the stakes for its upcoming Initial Public Offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO back in June. At that time, its valuation was $852 billion post-money, following a previous funding round in March.

The high bar set by OpenAI’s potential valuation has broader implications for the rest of the AI sector, particularly for its main rival, Anthropic. Many observers believe Anthropic’s public offering is closer to materializing, with rumors suggesting its S-1 filing could be released at any moment. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut. This ambitious target follows a $65 billion raise in May, which valued the company at $965 billion and was widely seen as its final major round before going public. Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, mirroring OpenAI’s timeline.

For California-based investors and tech professionals, these moves signal that the private market for AI remains deep and eager to fund the leading players at unprecedented scales. The interplay between private mega-rounds and public market debuts is becoming a defining feature of the current tech landscape. As terms are finalized, the focus will turn to how these valuations translate into public market performance and whether the sector can sustain such high expectations.
