Wolves enter Finnish villages after Google clears forest for AI hubs
Displaced wildlife is moving into nearby communities following unauthorized deforestation by the tech giant.

Residents of villages near Muhos and Otanmäki are reporting increased sightings of wolves and other wild animals entering their neighborhoods. This shift in local wildlife behavior is a direct consequence of recent construction activities by Google. The tech company has been building data centers to support its artificial intelligence infrastructure, a project that has resulted in significant changes to the landscape. As the natural habitats of these animals were altered, they began migrating toward human settlements in search of space and food. For locals, this is no longer just an environmental debate; it is a matter of daily safety and peace of mind.
The scale of the land alteration is substantial. Approximately 816 acres of forest have been transformed into an open expanse of mud due to the construction. Additionally, authorities have ordered a halt to work on another 500 acres of cleared land. These sites are located roughly 55 miles southeast of the village of Otanmäki. The total area affected represents a significant portion of the local ecosystem, which was previously dense with trees and undergrowth. The clearing of this green space has removed the natural barriers and cover that typically keep wild animals at a distance from homes.
The people directly impacted include families who have lived in the region for generations. Anni Ranta, a 53-year-old resident of Otanmäki, noted that her family has been in the area for a long time. She explained that wolves are now coming into the village because the wild animals were forced out of the forest. Beyond the immediate wildlife concerns, Ranta expressed a broader strategic worry. She fears that the presence of U.S.-owned data centers could make Finland a more attractive target for Russian aggression. This view highlights how local infrastructure projects can intersect with national security perceptions.
The financial and regulatory stakes are high for Google. The company’s approach to environmental policy has been described as unprecedented by a representative of the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority, known as LVV, issued an order for Google to cease its development activities in the affected areas. This regulatory move signals that the government is taking the unauthorized clearings seriously. Google must now navigate a complex relationship with local regulators while trying to maintain its ambitious AI expansion plans.
Despite the halt in construction, Google has maintained a positive stance. A company spokesperson stated that they will fully comply with the requests from the LVV. The spokesperson added that the company looks forward to maintaining an active and open dialogue with all authorities. This strategy aims to strengthen Google’s partnership with Finland and local organizations. The tech giant is likely hoping that the long-term business benefits of its data centers will outweigh the short-term friction caused by the environmental issues.
This incident is part of a larger global pattern. Finland is not the first location where AI data center developers have faced criticism for their environmental impact. Similar complaints have been raised in the United States and other countries. Common grievances include construction noise, streams turning brown, and rare bird species being displaced. As the demand for AI computing power grows, the tension between rapid technological expansion and environmental preservation continues to intensify in various parts of the world.
The situation serves as a case study for how tech infrastructure can alter local ecosystems. The unauthorized clearing of forests has created a chain reaction that extends beyond the construction site. It affects the behavior of wildlife, the safety of residents, and the relationship between a multinational corporation and its host country. As Google moves forward with its AI ambitions, it must balance its technical goals with the expectations of the communities where its hardware is installed.
